What Is My Body Type?

Understanding your body proportions can be useful when choosing clothes, experimenting with different silhouettes, or simply learning more about your natural shape. This tool gives you an estimated body type by looking at the relationship between your bust or chest, waist, and hips.

The result is a general guide rather than a fixed label. Everyone’s proportions are different, and your body may not fit perfectly into one category.

How Does the Calculator Work?

The calculator compares your measurements to identify a common body-shape pattern.

For women, it looks at the relationship between the bust, waist, and hips. For men, it compares the chest, waist, and hips.

You can enter your measurements in inches or centimeters. Height and weight can also be added, but they aren’t used to determine the body-shape category.

How to Take Your Measurements

Accurate measurements will give you a more useful result. Use a flexible measuring tape and stand naturally while measuring.

Bust or Chest

Women can measure around the fullest part of the bust, keeping the tape level across the back.

Men can measure around the fullest part of the chest. Keep the tape comfortably against your body without pulling it too tightly.

Waist

Measure around your natural waist. This is usually the narrower area of your torso.

Don’t pull your stomach in while measuring. Keep your body relaxed so the measurement reflects your natural proportions.

Hips

Place the tape around the fullest part of your hips and buttocks. Make sure the tape stays level around your body.

If possible, take each measurement twice to make sure the numbers are consistent.

Female Body Types

The calculator may give you one of several common results for women.

Hourglass

An hourglass pattern generally has a bust and hip measurement that are relatively similar, with a noticeably smaller waist.

Triangle or Pear

A triangle or pear pattern generally means the hips are wider than the bust.

Inverted Triangle

An inverted triangle pattern means the bust is noticeably wider than the hips.

Rectangle

A rectangle pattern generally has similar bust and hip measurements with less difference between those measurements and the waist.

Balanced

A balanced result means your measurements don’t strongly match one particular pattern. Your proportions may sit somewhere between several categories.

Male Body Types

The calculator uses the chest, waist, and hip measurements for the male results.

Inverted Triangle

This pattern generally has a noticeably broader chest compared with the hips.

Triangle

A triangle pattern means the hips are wider than the chest.

Oval

An oval pattern generally occurs when the waist measurement is larger than both the chest and hips.

Rectangle

A rectangle pattern has relatively similar chest and hip measurements, with less difference around the waist.

Trapezoid

A trapezoid pattern generally has a chest that is somewhat broader than the waist while the chest and hips remain fairly balanced.

Does Height Change Your Body Type?

Height doesn’t determine the body-shape category used by this calculator.

Two people can have similar bust, waist, and hip proportions while having different heights. Their overall appearance may still look different because height affects the way those proportions are distributed across the body.

The calculator therefore keeps height separate from the shape calculation.

Does Weight Affect the Result?

Weight isn’t used to determine your body type either.

People at the same weight can have very different proportions because of differences in muscle, bone structure, and where body fat is distributed.

That’s why the calculator focuses on measurements rather than weight when estimating your shape.

What Is the BMI Result?

If you enter both your height and weight, the calculator can display an estimated BMI.

BMI is a height-to-weight calculation commonly used as a general screening measure. It doesn’t tell you your body shape and doesn’t directly measure body fat or muscle mass.

For that reason, treat the BMI number separately from your body-type result.

Can Your Body Type Change?

Your measurements can change over time, so the result from a calculator like this can change too.

Changes in muscle mass, body composition, weight, age, pregnancy, and other factors can affect your proportions. However, your underlying skeletal structure may remain relatively consistent.

There’s also no requirement to have one particular shape. Body proportions naturally vary from person to person.

How Can You Use Your Result?

Your result can be a useful starting point when experimenting with clothing.

You might try different necklines, waist placements, jacket lengths, trousers, skirts, dresses, or layering techniques and see which ones you personally prefer.

A body-type category shouldn’t limit your choices. If you like a particular style, you can wear it regardless of what the calculator says.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the result exact?

No. The calculator provides an estimate based on the measurements you enter. Small differences in measurements can change the result, and real bodies don’t always fit neatly into simplified categories.

Can I use centimeters?

Yes. You can enter your bust or chest, waist, and hip measurements in either inches or centimeters.

Can I enter height in feet?

Yes. The height field allows you to choose centimeters, inches, or feet.

Can I enter weight in pounds?

Yes. Select lb from the weight-unit menu. Kilograms are also supported.

Do I have to enter my height and weight?

No. They are optional. Your bust or chest, waist, and hip measurements are the measurements needed for the body-shape calculation.

Why did I get a different result from another calculator?

Different calculators can use different measurement thresholds and classification methods. Body-shape categories are not a universal scientific classification, so results can vary between tools.

Is this a medical calculator?

No. This tool is intended for general information and styling purposes. It isn’t designed to diagnose or assess a medical condition.

A Simple Way to Think About Your Result

Your result is best viewed as a description of your current proportions, not a definition of your body.

Use it as a helpful reference if you’re interested in clothing, styling, or understanding how your measurements relate to common body-shape categories. Most importantly, choose clothes and styles based on what makes you feel comfortable and confident.
